DESCRIPTION: Design and construct a new brick lined concrete chimney for Guardian Industries' new float glass plant.
LOCATION: Queretaro, Mexico
SUMMARY: International Chimney Corporation was charged with the design and construction of one new brick lined concrete chimney for Guardian Industries’ new float glass plant in Queretaro, Mexico. The brick lining height is 417' with a top inside diameter of 8'-6". Its base starts 17' below grade where Guardian’s underground flue enters. The concrete outer column has a constant inside diameter of 22' for its entire height with wall thicknesses varying from 20" at the bottom to 8" at the top.
Our engineering team designed the chimney and lining to meet extremely high seismic requirements (exceeding U.S. Zone 4). Very heavy (3-face) steel reinforcement was required in lower portions of the concrete column and the brick lining was designed to be constructed in eleven independent sections instead of one full height lining, all to overcome high seismic loads. Gas temperatures near 1000°F made insulating the lower three lining sections a requirement to keep stress levels in lower portions of the concrete column within acceptable limits.
Material selection and construction standards were held high to withstand continuous service, 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, for longer than 15 years before the first planned outage (typical with glass plants). Construction began in October with original completion slated for August 1st. To meet the customer’s revised schedule, International Chimney made adjustments to shave one month off the original schedule. Construction was completed in time to satisfy the customer’s needs.
Similar (315' lining height) chimneys were constructed by International Chimney for Guardian Industries’ plants in DeWitt, Iowa; Rayong, Thailand; Geneva, New York; and Resende Brazil. |
