| Guardian's New Chimney, Geneva, NY |
DESCRIPTION: Design/build a 315' high concrete chimney with brick lining
LOCATION: Geneva, New York
SUMMARY: International Chimney Corporation was charged with the design and construction of a new concrete chimney with an independent brick lining for Guardian Industries’ new float glass plant in Geneva, NY. Guardian’s new chimney has a height of 315' from bottom to top of brick lining with a top inside diameter of 8'-6" (lining ID). The brick lining’s base starts 17' below grade where Guardian’s new underground flue enters. The concrete outer column has a constant inside diameter of 18' for its entire height with varying wall thicknesses to suit design conditions.
Material selection and construction standards were held high to withstand continuous service at 1400°F (design temperature), 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, for longer than 15 years before the first planned outage. Construction of the Geneva chimney began in late fall and was completed early the following year. The concrete column was finished before the worst of the weather set in. A temporary enclosure was constructed at grade to protect our brick staging area during construction of the brick lining. The outer column protected the lining itself and insulated it from the winter weather. Heat was pumped into the column to keep temperatures within acceptable limits. Specialized equipment was used to construct the concrete column and to install the brick lining. Shown here is a moveable “floating” platform suspended from above during lining installation.
Identical chimneys were constructed by ICC for Guardian Industries’ plants in DeWitt, Iowa; Rayong, Thailand; and Resende Brazil. Similar chimneys (with radial brick outer columns and firebrick linings) were constructed by ICC for numerous other Guardian plants within the United States. |
